home and Shanthayya took good care of her. She however decided to
find her fate in Kakinada where there was already Manjunath yani
Cherdappa running a restaurant business. Manjunath was the younger
brother of Dasappa and son of Mijar Annappa Kamath. We know that
wife of Annappa Kamath was Ammanni, who was one of the three sisters
mentioned in table 2. Naturally Ammanni helped Leelavathi get a
foothold in her life by recommending change of place for her. Ammanni
suggested that Leelavathi travel to Kakinada to work in her son’s
restaurant. Shanthayya her father accompanied her to Kakinada since it
involved traveling by train for over 24 hours. Dasappa’s son Vittal was

Bantwal. He had had two marriages already and both wives had died.
The first wife had died issueless. The second wife had given birth to
three children and when she died there was an urgent need for a
housewife to look after the small children. Das Baliga found Sappulli in
Mijar and after negotiations with Shanthayya, her father, Das married
Sappulli. Shanthayya did not wish to give Sappulli as a third wife since
the prevalent superstition regarded any third marriage to turn into a
disaster for the family. So a ritualistic third marriage was conducted with
a small tree as a bride. This satisfied everyone and all wished little
Suppulli a happy and long happy married life. This marriage of Das
Baliga was considered as his fourth.
The first child of the second wife was named Indira. Indira died in her
infancy. The second child Anusuya grew up and got married. We do not

second wife was a boy named Nagappayya. Sappulli took care of the
two children of the dead former wife of her husband.

Balepuni Nagappayya Baliga
Nagappayya was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and when he was old
enough, he took part in the Freedom Struggle. One day he went missing
after walking with a Sathyagrahi procession in Bantwal. There was a
police action and the protesters were beaten and then arrested. They
were later jailed for rebellion against the rulers and made to serve
different periods of imprisonment. Nagappayya did not return that day
and he was never found in spite of extensive search by the family.
Nagappayya was presumed dead so that in 1996 Hanumantha, his
brother arranged to conduct an Arka marriage. This ritual liberates a
bachelor’s soul from what is known as Brahmachari Bind. A soul in
Brahmachari Bind creates disruptions in the life of his brothers and
sisters. Once it is liberated by the Arka marriage it flies away in peace.

ADYAR GOPAL PARIVAR
Everyone knows where on earth India is
and If one searches the Karnaataka state
map one finds the Dakshina Kannada
District on the Southern coast of
Karnaataka state.

Adyar is now (2013) a part of the
Mangalore Municipal Corporation (MMC).
But in the year 1898 A.D., the village of
Adyar was a beautiful rural hamlet with
Nethravathi River flowing through it. Two
unpaved roads passed through Adyar
village on each bank of the river, from the
District headquarters town of Mangalore to
the interior areas; principally, to Gurpur and
Mijar and then on to Moodbidri, Karkala,
Agumbe and so on.

But it was to the sourthern Kasargod
District, situated south of Mangalore that
much of the trade lines were running. The
villages of Ullal, Manjeshwar, Kumble,
Kasargod, Bekal Fort, Kanhangad,
Nileshwar and Kannanore, along the coast
of Kasargod district, formed the most
important places where Gowda Saaraswath
Braahman community lived and prospered.
The district of Kannanore (known as
Cannanore before and as Kannur now),
was particularly rich in GSB population.
Kannada language was used as the
administrative language, since very ancient
times in most of the Canara region but
since the time of Vijayanagara Dynasty i.e.
since 14th Century Kannada was used
extensively in commerce and literature. The
mother tongue of the GSBs was however
Konkani language and not Kannada. The
GSB people always spoke Konkani
language in their homes since very early
history of India. The Konkani language is a
vernacular form of Sanskrit language. The
Canara and Malabar area was ruled by the
British Crown until 1947 when India got
Independence.
