BY MOHAN SHENOY
The story begins from the last decade of the nineteenth century.
Radhu was the third daughter of Parvathi and Madhav Kini of Sampige
village near Moodbidri in South Canara District of the erstwhile Madras
A part of the story belongs to the Mijar Yedapadav village situated near
Manjunath yani Cherdappa, son of Mijar Annappa Kamath married
Radhu, the third daughter of Sampige Madhav Kini. Radha Bai wife of
Adyar Gopal was the eldest child of Radhu and Manjunath Kamath.
Manjunath went to Kakinada, a seashore town, on the East Coast of
India and worked there, in a restaurant owned by a distant relative.
After about two years, Manjunath started his own restaurant and
became prosperous. He got his wife and child to move to Kakinada and
live with him there.
In due course, Radhu gave brith to two more children, a girl and a boy.
In all Radhu gave birth to three children, Amba, Kitti and Mukundray.
Manjunath and Radhu got married in 1914 the exact date is not known.
Radhu and her husband Manjunath lived in Mijar and led a happy
Amba, daughter of Radhu married Gopalakrishna, the second son of
Adyar Manjunath Shanubhogue..
Amba marries Gopalakrishna
Amba was the granddaughter of Sampige Madhav Kini. She was the
daughter of Radhu, the third daughter of Madhav Kini. Every one
referred to Amba as sister Amba or Ambakka. Amba’s father was Mijar
Manjunath, yani Cherdappa Kamath.who was the son of Mijar Annappa
Kamath. Dasappa was the elder son of Annappa.
Radhu became pregnant and went to her maternal home in Sampige
village for delivery. In Sampige Radhu delivered a baby girl in 1916.
The baby was given the name of Amba. Manjunath was very happy
upon hearing the news and danced with joy because he became a
father. He distributed Mithai ladoo a sweet in the village. He went to
Sampige to see his child Amba. This Amba is the girl who became
Radha Bai upon growing up and getting married to Gopalakrishna.
In Mijar and surrounding villages there are Jain families owning land
and living happily. One Jain man by the name Indra was a teacher in
the local school. His daughter was a beautiful girl known as Chandri.
When Radhu went to her maternal home for delivery her husband felt
lonely. And made friends with this Jain girl Chandri. Chandri and
Manjunath eloped and know one knew where they had gone.
The bad news was conveyed to Sampige family in Sampige. Hearing
the news Radhu was greatly distressed and ashamed of herself and her
husband. There was a commotion in the Mijar home of Annappa
However after about six months Annappa Kamath the father received a
letter from Cherdappa. Cherdappa wrote that he was misguided and
committed a blunder by running away with another woman while
married to Radhu. He said he was sorry. He begged for forgiveness
from his parents and pleaded with his wife to forget what happened.
Cherdappa returned to Mijar in a few days. Immediately he went to
Sampige village to bring his wife and baby back to Mijar to live with him.
The baby was then about six months old. When Cherdappa came to
Sampige his wife and the baby were not at home.Radhu conveyed a
message to Cherdappa that his actions have made them loose all of
their prestige and so she is not coming back to him.
Cherdappa was highly emotional person and felt badly upon his wife’s
refusal to live with him. Cherdappa returns to Mijar empty handed.
Dejected Cherdappa wanders around for some days and then takes a
train to Madras. And then realizing that he can work in a restaurant
owned by a relative of the family in Kakinada, he travels to Kakinada.
The British administration in that area had laid Railway line in 1910
enabling local citizens to travel from Mangalore to Madras and then
further up to Kolkata for either for employment or for education.
Cherdappa wrote a letter to his parents in a short time. He wrote that he
had got a job in a restaurant in Kakinada and please dont worry about
Radhu did not move from her maternal home to her husband’s house in
Mijar. Amba grew up in her maternal grandfather’s house.in Sampige

Everyone knows where on earth India is
and If one searches the Karnaataka state
map one finds the Dakshina Kannada
District on the Southern coast of
Adyar is now (2013) a part of the
Mangalore Municipal Corporation (MMC).
But in the year 1898 A.D., the village of
Adyar was a beautiful rural hamlet with
Nethravathi River flowing through it. Two
unpaved roads passed through Adyar
village on each bank of the river, from the
District headquarters town of Mangalore to
the interior areas; principally, to Gurpur and
Mijar and then on to Moodbidri, Karkala,
Agumbe and so on.
But it was to the sourthern Kasargod
District, situated south of Mangalore that
much of the trade lines were running. The
villages of Ullal, Manjeshwar, Kumble,
Kasargod, Bekal Fort, Kanhangad,
Nileshwar and Kannanore, along the coast
of Kasargod district, formed the most
important places where Gowda Saaraswath
Braahman community lived and prospered.
The district of Kannanore (known as
Cannanore before and as Kannur now),
was particularly rich in GSB population.
Kannada language was used as the
administrative language, since very ancient
times in most of the Canara region but
since the time of Vijayanagara Dynasty i.e.
since 14th Century Kannada was used
extensively in commerce and literature. The
mother tongue of the GSBs was however
Konkani language and not Kannada. The
GSB people always spoke Konkani
language in their homes since very early
history of India. The Konkani language is a
vernacular form of Sanskrit language. The
Canara and Malabar area was ruled by the
British Crown until 1947 when India got
