TOURIST DESTINATION - KASHI AKA BANARAS AKA VARANASI

WHERE IS KASHI?

As of 1st June 2012
Kashi is situated in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The state of Uttar Pradesh is surrounded by other Indian states but forms an international border with an all-Hindu souvereign country Nepal.

Uttar Pradesh is surrounded by other Indian states all around except in the north where Nepal becomes the immediate neighbour. The state of Himachal Pradesh is in the Northwest, Uttarakhand next to Himachal Pradesh towards East, Nepal (Soureign State not belonging to India) still Eastwards, and Bihar below Nepal; Jarkhand below Bihar; Chattisghar on the West side of Jarkhand; Madhya Pradesh still Westwards; Delhi and Haryana directly in the West side of Uttar Pradesh.Uttar Pradesh is one of the bread baskets of India.

Indian civilization has been rooted in Uttar Pradesh which along with Bihar, Bengal and Odisha form the bedrock of Hinduism.
How to reach the Kashi Math in Varanasi?
One can reach Kashi by road, rail or air.
As of 1st June 2012.
There is an airport in Varanasi and regular flights are operated from and to Delhi. As the connectivity to Delhi is good from any part of the country, it is wise to first come to Delhi and then fly by one of the airlines to Varanasi.

There are more than 70 trains that pass through Varanasi Railway station every day. There are many trains which run on the Varanasi-Allahabad railway line but more trains pass through Mughal Sarai Station which is next to Varanasi. Pilgrims can travel to Mughal Sarai and then come to Varanasi by either bus, autorickshaw, or hand-pulled two-wheeler rickshaw.

TAKE A DIP IN THE RIVER GANGA

To go and take a dip in the Ganga River in Kashi is the most desirable religious activity for any GSB. Even if one does not believe in the sacredness of Ganga, a visit to the banks of the Ganga River in Kashi is a pleasant pilgrimage. Ganga River has become very dirty but imagine that the water keeps flowing and a few meters away from the edge is quite clear for taking a dip.

The three Matthadeeshas (Principals of the Maths)

A visit to the ancient Hindu seats of Prayaag and Kaashi is a life-long desire of every Gowda Saraswat Brahman (GSB).

All the three Maths, viz. Kashi Math, Gokarna Math and Kavale Math have their branches in Kashi. They are located in the same narrow lanes close to each other and on the way to Brahmaghat.
The Kashi Math was inaugurated in Kashi itself in the the 16th Century. The GSB pilgrims plan to stay in any one of the Maths but here only the Kashi Math premises in Varanasi are described.

Shankaraacharya has been attributed to have started the concept of forming Matha(s) to propagate his Advaitha philosophy.
MOVING FROM PLACE TO PLACE IN KASHI
As of 1st June 2012

There is no fixed charge and no meters on the autorickshaws. We shall bargain with the driver to arrive at a reasonable price. We paid Rupees Eighty for the trip for two people in a regular autorickshaw in June 2012.

The distance from the railway station to the Maida Gin Golghar is about 5 kilometers. The roads are very narrow and the traffic is horrendous during days, but light in the nights.

Maida Gin Golghar has no signs posted any where. We have to rely on the autorickshaw driver to take us to the right place.

After we reach Maida Gin Golghar only half the journey is over. The next half is terious because we have to walk through narrow slippery pathways where there are big cows moving slowly. They are generally very calm and cool. They do not attack passers-by.

The path is confusing for the newly arrived pilgrim and one has to ask for directions at almost every corner.

It takes about 20 minutes by brisk walk to reach Kashi Math near Brahmaghat.

   SRI KASHI MATH, VARANASI

Devotees can visit the temples that are found at every corner. Unlike in churches where the deity is always the same viz. Jesus Christ, and in Mosques where there are no idols, the temples have a different idol of a different deity in them for the devotees to worship. The Shiva Temple shown here has the Linga as the deity.
